As an East London based magazine, with many of our contributors also living and working in the area, we feel that the planned demolition of Vittoria Wharf in Hackney Wick, a unique creative hub and home to over 100 residents, needs as much attention as we can give it.
Before being elected, London mayor Sadiq Khan campaigned on the need for London to have new homes for low and middle income households. Yet, the mayor’s office has still not commented on these plans that would lead to all the people currently living and working in Vittoria Wharf losing their homes and studios, as well as local businesses being destroyed that make this area a distinctive part of east London.
The reason given by the London Legacy Development Corporation, who are in charge of the plans, is the construction of a pedestrian bridge – a strange reason given there is already a foot bridge a mere twenty meters away.
We at PUSS PUSS magazine urge you to please go and sign the petition to save Hackney Wick here.
We also commissioned photographer and artist Kirsten Allen to document the people and pets of Vittoria Wharf who are in danger of losing their homes and their community.
