Originally designed in the late 18th century for the apartments of Marie Antoinette herself, the oval-backed Medallion Chair is not only a symbol of French art de vivre and Louis XVI style that the house of Dior is so fond of. The chair has also become a canvas for many artist’s unqiue interpretations, including Joy de Rohan Chabot, Pierre Charpin and Ma Yansong who previously have been invited by the brand to reimagine the piece in their unique way. This time round, Dior teamed up with the French industrial architect and designer Philippe Starck to reinvent the chair for the Salon del Mobile 2022 in Milan. Named ‘Miss Dior’ for its sleek silhouette and lightweight nature, the art piece holds longevity and simplicity as its core purposes. “When Dior asked me to work on this model, I had a feeling of squaring the circle, of completing a cycle. For the first time, I could work on the origin of this iconic symbol, the origin of the myth”, says Philippe Starck about his creation.
