Oh Hello Jo

Meet Jo Rosenthal artist, writer, fashion enthusiast and our newest columnist. She’ll be writing about everything from love and dating to finances and how to have a good time. Consider it like a modern day Sex and the City – but one that’s more realistic where the girl doesn’t always get the love of her life, the fabulous pair of shoes and doesn’t always have a group of girlfriends to brunch with. A writer since she was a child, Jo isn’t afraid to tackle mental illness, heartbreak and emotion. “Some days I laugh all day and others I cry the entire time and whatever happens, I try and wear a fashionable outfit,” she says. “I find that the way I dress really influences who I set out to be in the world. I’m always trying to figure out who I am and what my place is. So far I know that I’m a 5’2 hopeless romantic with flat feet, a good sense of humour and a unique style.” Stay tuned for next week’s column where Jo will be talking about the last time she slid into someones DM’s, how to not be so hard on yourself and ways to make the most of the summer if you don’t like to party all of the time. In the meantime, here are all the basics you need to know…

AF: Where are you based and what is your favourite thing about where you live?
JO: I’m based in Greenpoint, New York. My favourite part of where I live is how much of a community it is. I always see people waving at each other, smiling at the sunshine, helping each other out with groceries, you get it!
AF: What does your ideal weekend look like?
JO: My ideal weekend consists of a lot of waffles (even though I’m trying to be gluten free right now because of health reasons), a dance party (which is always hard to find), lots of laughter, trying to make plans with friends, trying to flirt…really a lot of trying to do things but I end up drinking matcha with a good book or movie and sitting outside – if the weather is nice.
AF: What’s your favourite book?
JO: My favourite book is Music For Chameleons by Truman Capote.
AF: What did you want to be when you were little?
JO: I had an obsession with working a toy cash register and I would always tell my mom I wanted to be a cashier because I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I also always wanted to be an actress, an artist, a clown, a writer and a baker.
AF: What’s your dream holiday destination?
JO: I would absolutely love to go to Italy!
AF: Do you have a favourite item of clothing?
JO: My favourite item of clothing is the first pair of vintage Levis I bought when I moved to New York almost eight years ago!
