Most of us first discovered the enchanting world of beauty perched on the bathroom counter, our eyes sparkling with wonder as we watched our mothers masterfully navigate through an array of tubes and brushes. This journey began similarly for Ninni Nummela, an official makeup artist with Chanel Beauty. She fondly remembers observing her mom apply subtle, graceful makeup that effortlessly highlighted her inherent elegance. For Ninni, makeup artistry isn’t just about adding colours and contours; it’s a gentle dance of revealing and enhancing the beauty that naturally exists within each person. Our recent collaboration with Chanel Beauty drew  inspiration from the chic and versatile 31 Le Rouge lipstick. Explore our conversation below, where Ninni shares her treasured makeup tips, must-have products, and gives us a glimpse into the creativity behind One More Kiss, Dear.

April Wan: We met on set for our Chanel Beauty Special in the upcoming AW23 issue, you’re an official makeup artist for the brand. How did this relationship start?
Ninni Nummela: Chanel has always been one of my favourite brands. I started working with Chanel by collaborating on beauty shoots and built a good relationship with the brand and the lovely team. It all happened very naturally, I think our similar aesthetic and style of makeup worked very well.
AW: What was your first memory of makeup?
NN: My first memory of makeup must be my mum getting ready. She however didn’t wear red lipstick or a smoky eye, she kept her look very minimal and natural, only using a slick of brown mascara paired with a brownish wine lipstick applied as a stain on her lips.

I think this has definitely influenced my style of makeup, I always strive to cover up as little as possible and enhance the individual beauty in the people I work with.
AW: Chanel Beauty has released a new collection of lipsticks 31 Le Rouge inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s flat and her first boutique. What are your favourite shades for daytime and evening wear?
NN: For daytime, I prefer a bright red or a shade slightly darker than my natural colour. In the evening, however, I love a deeper red, like wine-stained lips. A bold lip paired with natural radiant skin and a coat of mascara is such a beautiful and powerful look. There’s definitely beauty in simplicity.

AW: How do you feel about the numerous makeup trends that go viral on TikTok? For example, the highlighting/contouring trends, latte and clean girl makeup. Should makeup be personalised for every person instead?
NN: I think trends come and go and they can definitely be inspiring. However, we are all beautiful in different ways and I think makeup is about enhancing our individual beauty. Saying that I also think makeup is about experimenting and having fun, and social media is definitely a place where you can find references and even learn new tips.
AW: With the holiday season approaching, Chanel Beauty offers various products, from makeup and nail polish to brushes and skincare. Could you share your top holiday recommendations from their collection?
NN: Definitely the new 31 Le Rouge lipstick. It comes in a beautiful glass case inspired by the mirrored stairs of 31 Rue Cambon.
The new Holiday Eyeshadow palette LUMIÈRE GRAPHIQUE EXCLUSIVE CREATION.
The iconic, and my all-time favourite, Rouge Noir nail polish.
Anything from the luxurious Sublimage skincare range!
The Noir Allure mascara. A great mascara in a very chic packaging.
AW: What is more important, a skincare or a makeup routine?
NN: I would say a good and consistent skincare routine is more important, as healthy skin is the best foundation. The healthier your skin is, the less makeup you will want to apply.

AW: What’s the difference between an editorial makeup look and one on the red carpet?
NN: An editorial look can be more creative as it doesn’t have to stay on for a long time, and you are constantly there to do touch-ups if needed. Glossy textures on eyes and skin can photograph beautifully but won’t be convenient on the red carpet for example.
When doing red carpet makeup, you need to make sure the look will last and that it photographs well with all the cameras and bright flashes.
AW: In our Chanel Beauty special, ‘One More Kiss, Dear,’ we showcased the exquisite 31 Le Rouge lipstick. Could you elaborate on the inspirations you derived from this product while crafting the captivating makeup looks for the feature?
NN: I was inspired by the references behind each shade. For example, the beautiful burgundy of the hidden leather lining inside the iconic 2.55 bag, the red ribbons that Gabrielle knotted around her ankles during collection periods, to bring her good luck, and her passion for Baroque jewellery.
I wanted to bring out the beautiful colours but also play with textures to enhance the luminous finish of the lipstick.
AW: Do you think makeup trends are recycled, just like fashion? For example, the dark lip liner and thin eyebrows have returned recently.
NN: Absolutely, trends return, often with updated, modernised twists.
